PICTURE OF THE MONTH
Built on two levels, just over Le Moulin Vieil, access is up a staircase or along a level path from the gardens.
La Fête de la Transhumance, a traditional provencal jamboree, is centered in Saint Rémy de Provence.
The final (for the moment!!) touch to our hamlet, La Bastide. (Check out the new sunroom-- our winter '08 project!)
La Tuilerie is where we started a few years ago on this big project! The building was built in about 1630 and served as the home of tile and brick makers, as well as a small farm.
The entire front of the house is a big "jardin de curé," with an extended terrace, stone barbaque, and private parking.
L´Orangerie is just right for a couple or for a small, young family! A great place to relax, either in front of the large fireplace in winter, or on the shaded patio in summer.
Summertime in Provence! Perfect for relaxing with a glass of rosé by the pool, lunch at a street-side table in downtown St. Rémy.
The city is well known for its Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes), where several popes and antipopes lived from the early 14th to early 15th centuries.
Aix (Aquae Sextiae) was founded in 123 BC by the Roman consul Sextius Calvinus . Aixs many attractions need no introduction... but we often forget to mention what a great place it is for families...
Arles was established by the Greeks as early as the 6th century BC under the name of Theline. The Romans took the town in 123 BC and expanded it into an important city, with a canal link to the Mediterranean Sea being constructed in 104 BC.
St Maries Sur Mer was noted in the 4th century AD by the geographer Rufus Festus Avenus. In the 6th century the archbishopric of Arles was active and created a monastery or church in the town, from which it first obtained the name St Mary. Capital of the Camargue, its a great place for the family to swim walk, cycle or ride.
The best time to visit Les Baux de Provence is early evening; or, better still, stay overnight because its the perfect village for families! Theres no traffic, so children can run about to their hearts content... and the light is really wonderful!
Originally known as Insula, the town officially adopted the name of LIsle-sur-la-Sorgue on 18 August, 1890, taking the latter part of their name from the river Sorgue, to which they owed much. A busy commerce developed until there were two annual fairs and two weekly markets. The current Thursday open-air market had its start on 9 November, 1596.
The city, founded by Celto-Ligurians and subsequently Hellenised as Glanon, was already old when it became a Romanised settlement in the first century BC.
